A four-week-old baby girl taken during a car-jacking in Birmingham has been found.

West Midlands Police (WMP) said an Audi A3 was stolen while the girl was still in a car seat in the back of the vehicle.

The public was urged to "look out for the child in case the offenders have realised what they have on board and abandoned her".

But police later confirmed she had been left at a health centre and would be reunited with her mother.

Dozens of officers were involved in the search for the girl and the grey Audi A3 S line after the car-jacking in Marie Drive, Acocks Green, in the south of the city on Thursday afternoon.

Her mother was taken to hospital after suffering leg injuries in the incident.

It is believed the car may have been travelling towards Solihull when last sighted.

A neighbour heard commotion and helicopters swarming above as a four-week-old girl was inside an Audi taken in a car-jacking.

Philomena Coggins, a resident on the drive, said she heard a lot of noise with people shouting incomprehensibly.

"I heard a lot about it, I think it's the house round the back of me. I only heard a lot of noise - I only found out later what it was about," she said. "There were helicopters flying all over the place. They were making such a noise - you couldn't hear anything. I think there was two at one point."

The 79-year-old added: "I heard people talking, shouting but I couldn't make out what they were saying... As long as everyone's alright, that's all that really matters. And the baby is fine, I'm told. That's all that really matters at the end of the day.

"It's just a child, isn't it? I was so upset when they first told me. Then they told me she's okay - thank god."

Social media flooded with a police public appeal for help on Thursday afternoon.

WMP tweeted: "Mum and baby will be re-united shortly, but we still have officers looking for a grey Audi A3 S line after the car-jacking in #AcocksGreen - have you seen it? Call 101."
