Birmingham City complete a sensational deadline day transfer for Premier League striker

Birmingham City have completed a remarkable transfer to bring Jay Stansfield back to St Andrew’s @Knighthead Park on a permanent basis.

Having spent last season on loan from Fulham and returned on Tuesday night as part of Marco Silva’s victorious Carabao Cup XI, the 21-year-old is now a Blues player for keeps.

That comes after a sensational transfer deadline day in which Blues refused to be denied in their pursuit for a player who became a fan favourite last term and only cemented that relationship when he scored for Fulham but declined to celebrate in front of the Tilton Road end in midweek. That turned out to be the end of Stansfield’s Craven Cottage career.

While the official club statement says the fee is undisclosed, a figure of £12-15million is being reported elsewhere, an amount that would be three, nearly four times as much as the previous League One record which saw Will Grigg move to Sunderland in 2019.

Stansfield has signed a seven-year contract and couldn’t hide his excitement about returning to what has become a spiritual home: "I am absolutely buzzing. It has been a long time coming, I think,” he told Blues TV.

"When I left, from the awards evening, the reaction from all the fans, even though it was a really tough season for Birmingham as a club and it didn't end the way we wanted it to end, I thought it was only right for me to come back here and take on this next challenge, and be part of such an amazing club and amazing project." Stansfield is Blues’ 17th signing of an incredible summer.
