Birmingham City new manager verdict delivered as Alex Neil handed huge snub

The race to replace Tony Mowbray as manager of Birmingham City is a clear two-horse race, at least as far as Blues supporters are concerned.

Asked to name their choice to take over in the St Andrew’s hot seat, two names have a clear lead over the rest of the field - although no candidate has won overwhelming backing from the Blues faithful.

One name will be familiar to Blues fans, Gary Rowett - former player, manager and then interim boss while Mowbray took sick leave last season as the club became embroiled in a game of managerial musical chairs.

John Eustace, interim Steve Spooner, Wayne Rooney, Mowbray, his assistant Mark Venus and then Rowett all took over at the helm at some point during the ill-fated campaign.

And although he could not save Blues from eventual relegation to the third tier for the first time in nearly 30 years, Rowett attracted 21% of the votes cast in our next Birmingham City manager poll.

But the man out in front is sacked Hull City boss Liam Rosenior, the man who worked with Rooney at Derby County, who claimed 26% of the 1,700 votes cast.

Favourite for the job with the bookies remains former Norwich, Preston, Sunderland and Stoke City manager Alex Neil, but not with the fans. Just eight percent of respondents favoured the Scot, who ranked fifth in the list of eight options supporters were given to vote on.

Neil is already reported to have held talks with the Birmingham City hierarchy about taking over at St Andrew’s and was a face in the crowd last season as Blues struggled under the guidance of Mowbray number two Venus. He remains a 2/1 shot to be appointed, ahead of Rowett (10/3) and Rosenior (9/2).
