Birmingham crash: Children aged 3 and 5 among those injured in Erdington road collision

Two young children, aged three and five, were among five people injured in a “serious collision” between a car and a people carrier in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said two adults who were in the people carrier suffered serious, possibly “life-changing” injuries following the incident on Summer Road in the Erdington area on Saturday night.

A five-year-old child in the people carrier suffered a broken leg, and a three-year-old child has suspected internal injuries.

The driver of a red VW Golf, a man in his 30s, has also been taken to hospital with suspected serious injuries.

Specialist officers are looking after three other children in the people carrier who sustained only minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at just before 11pm on Saturday.

The road remains closed at its junction with Sutton New Road and York Road on Sunday morning, and drivers are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

West Midlands Police has asked anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone with information to come forward.

Witnesses can call police on 101 quoting log 2917 of 23 March 2019, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
