Birmingham pub to close in tribute to 'cherished colleague' as customers say 'beautiful gesture'
A popular Birmingham pub will close its doors this afternoon, September 21, so staff can pay tribute to a "cherished colleague." The Plough in Harborne will close to the public for part of Saturday afternoon so the team can come together and celebrate the life of much-loved staff member Lucy Atkins.
Lucy, 20, was killed alongside her beloved dog Simba after she was struck by a car on West Boulevard in Quinton in June. Lucy, who was on foot, sustained serious injuries as she was struck by the vehicle between Barnes Hill and Quinton Road West just before 8.45am on Monday June 24.
The university student worked at the Plough during her summer breaks and was part of the team for many years. Devastated staff will come together to say goodbye to Lucy this afternoon in a gesture praised by customers as "beautiful."

The pub posted on September 20: "This Saturday 21st September, The Plough will be closed from 2pm - 4pm, so our team can come together to say goodbye to a cherished colleague and dear friend.
"Lucy, along with her beloved dog Simba, died this summer. This weekend, her friends and family will gather to celebrate her life. Lucy had been part of our team for many years and returned to us during her summer break after an incredible first year at university, where true to her nature, she had created friendships and beautiful memories.
"Lucy’s bright spirit, her unwavering optimism, and her gift for making everyone around her feel seen and loved will forever be missed. She truly was part of the Plough family, and we are heartbroken to have lost one of our own so soon.
"We hope you understand our need to close during this time, as we come together to give Lucy the farewell she truly deserves. Lucy, we miss you deeply—thank you for everything you brought into our lives." Members of the community as well as loyal customer praised the "beautiful" gesture.
