Birmingham train users told 'we're really sorry' as fire near railway track sparks disruption

Passengers are set to face cancellations and delays to trains 'all afternoon' after a fire broke out next to a railway track. All lines were blocked between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street at around midday on Saturday (Oct 12).

Disruption was set to last until 5pm, with Avanti West Coast issuing an apology to customers affected by the disruption. Confirming the fire involved gas cylinders near to the track, they told rail users: "We're really sorry."

Train services might be axed or diverted, with Cross Country trains advising passengers to check before travelling. Avanti West Coast warned services between Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley would also be affected by the incident.

Avanti West Coast said: "Due to a fire near the railway involving gas cylinders between Wolverhampton and Sandwell & Dudley all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 17:00 12/10.

"We're really sorry if this affects you and your journey today. If your journey's delayed 15 minutes or more, you can claim compensation at delayrepay.avantiwestcoast.co.uk. If your train is cancelled, your ticket's valid on the Avanti West Coast train immediately before or after the cancelled one.

"If you no longer wish to travel because your train's delayed or cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket."

Cross Country Trains added: "NEW: Due to a fire next to the track between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or diverted For further journey information, please check here."
