Runners from Birtley Athletics Club have completed a 136-mile charity relay for The People's Kitchen.

The continuous run took place between York and Birtley, with £850 currently raised for the charity, which is dedicated to supporting homeless and vulnerable people by tackling hunger and loneliness.

Starting at the historic York Castle on Saturday June 15, runners followed the National Cycle Routes through Yorkshire, Teesside, County Durham, and Newcastle, before making a stop at The People’s Kitchen, prior to returning to Birtley Golf Club. The marathon effort took just 22 hours and 15 minutes to complete.

Tommy Milmore, a Senior Club Coach and Committee member at BAC, organised the fundraising run, and the team were impressed by what they saw when the visited The People's Kitchen. He said: "The staff are all volunteers and were continually working, either cooking, serving, clearing tables or handing out bags of food.

"Their workload and commitment were very impressive. It was very humbling and gave us all a feeling of 'counting our blessings' and being thankful for what we have."

The People’s Kitchen operates 365 days a year, serving between 250 and 300 meals daily, and the organisation relies entirely on volunteers and public donations, with no government funding. Maggie Pavlou is a trustee for The People’s Kitchen and she also ran the first leg of the relay challenge.

She said: "It’s very heart-warming when organisations like Birtley Athletics Club decide to help us as fundraising efforts like this are essential to help us continue our work. We are extremely grateful to Birtley Athletics Club for undertaking this 136-mile run on our behalf.

"Fundraising efforts like this enable us to make life a little easier for many people by sharing hot meals and packages of clothing, toiletries, food, and other essential items."

If you would like to add to the £850 that has been raised out of the target of £1,000, donations can be made at Birtley Athletic Club’s JustGiving page here.
