Bishopton Ladies have reached a “special milestone” after winning their league unbeaten.

Bish, who competed in the West Division Two, finished runners-up last season with the team finishing bottom of the league only two years ago.

Now, six years on since their inception, the team have made history at the club by clinching their first ever ladies title. Bishopton ran out 52-5 winners against Uddingston last Sunday afternoon.

David Jackson, head coach of the club, says the women’s side is growing and that winning a league unbeaten, with the level of quality they faced, wasn’t something they had predicted pre-season.

He said: “I’m so pleased for everyone that’s been involved with the growth of women’s rugby at Bishopton. Winning West Division Two is a well deserved achievement for a fantastic group of people that have worked so hard and enjoyed a tremendous amount of fun along the way.

“Winning eight games in a row, against the quality of opposition in West Two, is beyond what we would have predicted pre-season. However, it’s a testament to the hard work and togetherness of our squad.

“The development across our ladies section season after season has been truly impressive, with results consistently improving and player numbers increasing.

“Together, they have all played their part in achieving this special milestone, from those that have been involved since our ladies section started to the players for whom this is their first season of enjoying rugby. Bishopton is a vibrant and growing club and our ladies team continues to be a big and very important part of that.”

Kirstie Brownlie, captain of Bishopton Ladies said: “The journey has been an absolute rollercoaster. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been here since the very beginning.

“I’ve had times where there were only four or five regular players at training and struggled to imagine ever playing a full 15-a-side contact game.

“When we were getting beaten every week, we were seen as a team that was guaranteed to lose, and it could have been so easy for the team to give up an drop the head but we never ever did all because of the resilience from the ladies.

“The team have only managed to create club history because of every single person involved, from coaches to players on the physical pitch to those who haven’t played every game but are still cheerleaders week in week out, to supporters who’ve stood by us from the beginning.”
