These bizarre ice sculptures have appeared beside a freezing road in Scotland
These bizarre, spindly ice sculptures have emerged on a roadside in Scotland after the recent cold snap.
The strange, branch-like structures may look otherwordly, but were created through very earthly means — water splashing from puddles during freezing conditions.
Motorists whizzing past the scene sloshed water onto the fence and bushes at the roadside — and the sculptures then formed in the freezing temperatures.
The unique set of circumstances caused the icicles to grow into a fascinating display.
Images of the icy spectacle were taken on the A702 near Biggar, South Lanarkshire.
Last week, the Met Office issued a yellow warning for icy conditions for parts of the north-east of England and Scotland, and in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.
Temperatures overnight in Scotland fell as low as -10C (14), although have risen again this week.
NHS England has urged people to stock up on medicines, check on vulnerable or elderly neighbours and get the flu jab during the chilly snap.
