Black Lightning spin-off Painkiller may go on to include cameos from a couple of other existing Arrowverse characters, showrunner Salim Akil has teased.
The series, which is set to follow Jordan Calloway's Khalil Payne, is currently shooting its first episode, a "backdoor pilot" that will air in late March as episode seven of the original show's ongoing fourth season.
"We fully intend for it to be a spin-off," Akil confirmed to SYFY WIRE, suggesting that fans should expect heavy tie-ins between the two outings. "I know that if Painkiller gets picked up, you'll probably see [sisters Jennifer and Anissa Pierce] in there."
Despite bringing DC Comics characters to life and broadcasting on The CW in the US, Black Lightning was the network's only superhero show that existed outside of the Arrowverse before its 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' storyline brought Cress Williams' Jefferson Pierce to Central City.
"Khalil is a young man ridden with the guilt of his troubled past from his former life in Freeland City, where, as a super-enhanced killing machine known as Painkiller, he was both a member of Tobias Whale's gang and a weapon of Agent Odell and the shadowy ASA," Painkiller's official synopsis reads.
"After attempting to bury the darker, devastatingly lethal Painkiller part of his persona, Khalil has distanced himself away from everyone he knows and loves in a new city, Akashic Valley, in order to find peace… but peace never comes easy for men with pasts like Khalil Payne and Painkiller."
Black Lightning airs on The CW in the US, and Netflix in the UK.
