DC Comics TV show Black Lightning is approaching its season two premiere and now we have confirmation of one character's series regular upgrade.

Jordan Calloway plays Khalil Payne in the show, but the first series only teased at the character's true potential.

Now he's officially been given a larger role come season two, which will begin broadcasting this October.

Announced at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner/executive producer Salim Akil revealed: "I'm thrilled to have Jordan upped as a series regular.

"He was a great asset to our show in the role of Khalil/Painkiller during season one, and now that he has evolved into Painkiller, I can't wait for you all to see him in season two."

Previously speaking about the forthcoming second edition of Black Lightning, actor Cress Williams (who plays Black Lightning himself) shared a few insights on the direction of China Anne McClain's character Jennifer Pierce.

"I think we're going to get into more about Jennifer's character and watching her come into her own and her powers, which I think is going to be a little more difficult," he said.

"It's not going to be the same as season one, where Anissa [Pierce] just embraced [her powers] and was ready to fight crime."

He added: "I think it's going to be a little bit more of a struggle, and from what I'm told we're just going to go harder.

"It's harder hitting and a little bit darker and kind of more moving in the direction of what we already started."

Black Lightning airs on The CW in the US and Netflix in the UK.
