The CW's latest teaser for the Black Lightning TV series celebrates the character's groundbreaking place in comics history.

One of the very first African-American superheroes comes to the small screen this autumn on The CW, home of Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow.

Unlike the ArrowVerse, Black Lightning is a more intimate story of a retired superhero who is called back into action to save the community he loves.

Jefferson Pierce (Prison Break's Cress Williams) walked away from heroics nine years ago to protect his family, but he's seen those around him be crushed under the thumb of the organised crime organisation known as The 100.

When his own daughter (China Anne McClain) and a promising high school athlete are in danger of being corrupted by The 100, Jefferson realises that it's time to don the costume of Black Lightning once again.

Black Lightning was created for the network by Being Mary Jane writer Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil, with support from DC TV mega-producer Greg Berlanti.

The character of Jefferson Pierce celebrates his 40th anniversary this year, having debuted in his own groundbreaking DC Comics solo series back in the spring of 1977.

In the decades since his origin in the DC Universe, Black Lightning has been a key member of both the Justice League and the Outsiders.
