Black Mirror episode 'San Junipero' provided a rare respite in the usually gloomy series – an episode that was genuinely heartwarming.

The season-four episode explored the relationship between Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) across time, while they were living in a simulated reality for the dying and the deceased.

While the concept was pretty sad in itself, writer Charlie Brooker has revealed that there was a scene cut that would have made the episode even more devastating.

"In 'San Junipero', there was going to be a sequence in which Gugu's character is spending some time in a kindergarten," he told a panel at the Vulture Festival.

"And you realise subsequently that those were all deceased children she was spending time with. We realised that'd just be too sad."

Yeah, that may have been the right call there, Charlie.

The episode has already become pretty iconic, with fellow Netflix show Orange is the New Black parodying it by showing Poussey (Samira Wiley) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks) reuniting one last time.

There was also a reference to 'San Junipero' in Netflix show Riverdale as Joaquin (Rob Raco) boards a bus with the title on it during his heartbreaking farewell with Kevin (Casey Cott).

It was recently honoured at the GLAAD Awards for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character).
