Black Panther 2's Michaela Coel lands next lead movie role

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Michaela Coel is joining forces with Anne Hathaway for a new film from Green Knight director David Lowery.

According to Deadline, the movie will be an "epic pop melodrama" titled Mother Mary. It will tell the story of a musician (played by Hathaway) and an iconic fashion designer (played by Coel) and their relationship.

Further cast and plot details remain under wraps for the time being, but the film is set to begin filming in Germany later this year.

Original tracks for Hathaway's character will be written and produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, with an original score composed by Daniel Hart.

As well as writing and directing the project, Lowery will also produce alongside Toby Halbrooks, James M Johnston, Jeanie Igoe, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach.

It's a pretty busy time for Coel right now, as she most recently starred in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Dora Milaje captain Aneka, and she will next be seen in Prime Video's much anticipated Mr and Mrs Smith reboot series.

While her exact role hasn't been disclosed yet, we do know that the actress will star alongside Donald Glover (Atlanta), Maya Erskine (Obi-Wan Kenobi), John Turturro (Severance) and Paul Dano (The Batman) on the series.

Meanwhile, Coel has previously stated that her acclaimed TV series I May Destroy You will not be getting a second season, despite its critical success and numerous awards.

"Definitely, there won't be a second season of I May Destroy You," she told Digital Spy last year. "I think I May Destroy You has been so huge it's destroyed itself [laughs], but you know, we continue making work and we do other things.
