The latest of Channel 4’s Walter Presents programmes, new series Black Widow revolves around one of Amsterdam’s biggest drug-dealing dynasties.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What’s it about?

Dutch drama Black Widow centres around Carmen, the daughter of a notorious Amsterdam crime lord who is forced to take over the family drug-smuggling business in an attempt to clear her husband’s debts.

The series is the newest pick from Walter Presents (a scheme where Italian TV producer Walter Iuzzolino selects foreign language dramas and comedies for Channel 4). Black Widow will be broadcast in Dutch with English subtitles.

What happens in episode one?

Episode one introduces us to the van Walravens and their financial issues which are rather less run-of-the mill your typical domestic money dramas. We’ll see Carmen’s husband’s Frans illegal dealings begin to impact the family when their son finds a gun in the family car.

Who’s in the cast?

Monic Hendrickx heads up the cast as the titular Black Widow, Carmen van Walraven. Though little-known among UK audiences, the Dutch actress has won several awards at film festivals in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile Carmen’s husband Frans van Walraven – a small time drug dealer in over his head – is played by Thomas Acda.

Where’s it filmed?

The series is set in Amsterdam so expect plenty of urban imagery, though due to its drug-dealing themes viewers will likely see more of the city’s dark underbelly than picturesque canals or tulip fields.

When’s it on?

Black Widow will air on Channel 4 at 10pm tonight. And if you get really drawn into the drama and want to binge watch a few episodes; series one and two will be available on All 4 after the first programme ends.
