It's been a long time coming, but the Black Widow movie is finally taking shape – and it's now found its director.

Black Widow will be helmed by Cate Shortland, the first woman to direct a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe independently.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Australian director was chosen over Belle's Amma Asante, as well as Maggie Betts, Melanie Laurent and Kimberly Peirce.

Shortland, who directed 2012 Nazi drama Lore and last year's horror Berlin Syndrome, was apparently a popular choice with Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson – and if you've got approval from Natasha Romanoff herself, you know you're onto a good thing.

Marvel producers must be relieved to have found their woman at last, as they reportedly met with over 65 contenders for the job.

Despite the fact that fans have been asking for this movie for years, production on the Black Widow solo adventure only began this year.

But great moves have already been made, with Nasty Women scribe Jac Schaeffer having been hired to write the script.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige said in 2016 that he's fully committed to pulling off a Black Widow movie, explaining: "Certainly the one [character] creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.

"We think she's an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of her is amazing. She's a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise."

There's no word yet on when we'll see Black Widow on the big screen, but it will become the second female-led Marvel movie after Captain Marvel is released in March 2019.
