'Blackadder', 'New Tricks' and 'The Young Ones' boost iPlayer's classic box sets to celebrate BBC centenary

A huge collection of classic BBC box sets are being added to iPlayer to mark the broadcaster's centenary year.

Favourite series including Blackadder, The Young Ones and New Tricks will join the BBC streaming service's offering of shows available to watch in celebration of the milestone anniversary.

The newly added content will also include documentary collections from David Attenborough, Michael Palin and Louis Theroux, as well as golden-age films including Citizen Kane, King Kong, Top Hat and Bringing Up Baby.

Box sets will be added throughout the year to bolster the choices available on iPlayer to include more classic shows than ever before.

Comedies will include 2point4 Children, dinnerladies, Keeping Up Appearances, The Royle Family, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and One Foot in the Grave as well as the more recent Gavin & Stacey, The Office, Miranda and Detectorists.

There'll also be plenty of drama to sink your teeth into, including Waterloo Road, Hustle, The Musketeers, Waking the Dead, Sherlock and The Fall.

Soap fans will also be pleased to find a carefully-curated selection of classic EastEnders episodes as well as hundreds more available from the Noughties.

Director of BBC iPlayer and channels Dan McGolpin said: "There’s no better time than during the BBC’s centenary year to discover a classic BBC series that you’ve never seen before or to watch one of your favourites again.

"From comedy series that re-wrote the rules, such as The Young Ones or The Royle Family through to ground-breaking comic drama for 2022 like This Is Going to Hurt, there’s something for everyone on BBC iPlayer."

As well as the classic shows being made available, there is also plenty of recent content to catch up on with Peaky Blinders, This is Going to Hurt, Chloe, The Witchfinder, Mood, Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America, The Responder, Cheaters, Toast of Tinseltown, The Tourist and The Green Planet all streaming.
