The long dark nights will soon be upon us as summer draws to a close and this means it is nearly time for the annual Blackpool Illuminations. The world-famous illuminations will be switched on from 30, August 2024 at 9:15pm and will be shining until 5 January, 2025.

The annual light show has been extended for a further two months from the previous year meaning more people will be able to take in the spectacular sight of the six mile long attraction. There will be more than a million lights transforming the night sky of Blackpool.

The much-anticipated switch-on will see a line-up of top music talent on display with an array of different artists set to keep crowds entertained. Among the artists are Sydnie Christmas, who captured the nation's hearts as she was crowned winner of Britain's Got Talent earlier this year. Headlining the show will be Ella Henderson. Ella will perform an extended set from her extensive catalogue of hits including the huge hit single, Ghost, as well as Glow and Yours.

Following several exciting performances, Spice Girl Mel B will pull the famous switch to trigger four months of illuminations with a spectacular burst of lasers and fireworks. The switch on is set to be star-studded and will be free of charge to those attending, it will be staged on the Tower Festival Headland on Friday 30 August in association with Hits Radio

The event, which attracts thousands of visitors every year promises to be bigger and better than ever as new features have been unveiled. Disco Donkey Cavalcade is just one of many new things to keep an eye out for. 12 donkeys, including five fabulous females and seven magnificent males, each with their names painted on, are all decked out in funky 70s-inspired swimwear, prancing around a 16-foot high platform. The installation is topped with a revolving mirror ball acting as a giant scoop of ice cream.

Another new feature will be Light Around the World By Leigh Francis. This will be based on the TV stars Leigh’s wildly imaginative childhood memories. Inspired by Leigh’s love for both space and dinosaurs, this installation brings to life his fascination with flight to life. Expect a 12ft tall dinosaur, space ship, astronaut, an airborne BMX bike, and Leigh himself flying through the skies towards The Blackpool Tower.

The lights will switch on at different times throughout the four month period with the lights beginning as early as 4.30pm in December. You can see all of the switch-on display times here
