Blake's 7 star Paul Darrow has passed away following a short illness, his agency has confirmed.

Darrow, who was 78, was best known for playing the cunning Kerr Avon in the BBC science-fiction series from 1978 to 1981.

Following the departure of original series lead Gareth Thomas (Blake) after two series, Darrow's character became de facto lead of the show, which was devised by Doctor Who writer and Dalek creator Terry Nation.

Born in Surrey, England, Darrow studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and appeared on television in such notable series as The Saint, Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, Hollyoaks, Toast of London and Little Britain.

He is also known to sci-fi fans for two guest roles in Doctor Who, playing Captain Hawkins in 1970 serial Doctor Who and the Silurians and Maylin Tekker in 1985's Timelash.

Darrow also provided the voice of "Jack" on independent radio stations JACK FM and Union JACK, commentating on current events.

In 2006, he published his autobiography, You're Him, Aren't You? and released an audiobook version in 2016.

Maureen Marrs, Darrow's long-time companion and PA, said: "Over three decades I have been Paul's confidante and have had the immense privilege of being part of his life.

"A star has gone out today; the world will be a darker place without him."
