Blind Policeman Uses Wife’s Eyes To ‘See’

The story of a blind policeman, whose loyal wife acts as his eyes, has been inspiring people across China - with the policeman’s patrol area among the safest in the country.

Pan Yong, 43, is the only policeman stationed at Lanba police station, near the local train station in Guiyang City, capital of China’s south-western Guizhou Province.

Since he began losing his eyesight in 2002, due to glaucoma and a cataract, his wife has been ‘walking him’, round his daily security checks of the railway station entrance.

Wife, Tao Hongying, 46, also works at the train station as a security guard. She believes it was “fate” that brought the two together.

And during the time that Pan Yong has been stationed there, he and his wife have created what has been called a “miracle”, in terms of public security.

There have been no criminal cases, no public security cases, and no traffic accidents over that decade – something the locals have attributed to the couple’s good karma.

Pan Yong, who said he “grew up in a police station”, is well known in the town for being hardworking and modest.

He said: “I have a small position but I love this profession. My wife calls me a workaholic. I believe serving the community brings real meaning to my life.

“I just feel like I’m contributing more when I stand at my post, even when I don’t have to. Although I can’t see the trains anymore, I can still hear them.”

Pan Yong thought his life was “finished” when he began losing his eyesight in 2002, but his wife’s encouragement gave him renewed hope.

The couple married in 2004, with Hongying recalling that it was Pan Yong’s “willpower” that attracted her.

Pan Yong added: “I trust her. When I hold her arm I always walk freely, like nothing can trip me.”
