Scores of motorists were fined for parking ‘illegally’ on Blackpool’s promenade.

Traffic wardens could be seen issuing tickets to vehicles which had chosen to park on pavements and on grass banks.

Some of the cars were parked close to the tramlines and others were balanced on the edge of grass verges.

The tickets were issued as crowds descended to the seaside resort over the weekend to enjoy the glorious weather, visit the Pleasure Beach or watch the Blackpool Air Show which was taking place during the afternoon.

Traffic wardens had issued around 60 tickets within a short period of time at around 6pm on Saturday next to the South Pier car park - opposite The Big One.

With spaces at a premium motorists had resorted to parking almost anywhere.

Wardens had been particularly keen to target those drivers who had parked close to the tram lines or in dangerous spots.

In one case a warden could be seen warning a driver who had driven on to tram lines after taking a ‘wrong turn’.

A sign at the front of the car park had warned visitors the car park was full but once drivers had parked on the pavements and grass areas others had followed suit.

One driver who could not find a space in the car park said: “People had parked anywhere and then the traffic wardens came and they blitzed everyone with a ticket.

“There was a line after line of cars with tickets on them.

“There were just not enough spaces for the number of people who had turned up. It  was just so busy."

Another driver, who said he had been lucky, added: “I think they missed me out as I parked a little later.”

As the heatwave continues, the second day of the air show will attract thousands of visitors to the seaside town again today.
