It’s dominated the TV landscape for almost eight years, but this April sees the start of the very last series of Game of Thrones. At least until the spin-offs start. Now, one of its biggest stars, Kit Harington, has opened up about what the series means to him.

In a word association game with Variety, Harington, who plays Jon Snow, calls co-star Emilia Clarke his “best mate”, her pets “bloody dragons,” Peter Dinklage “the funniest man I’ve ever met” and the Night Watch “smelly men”. But it’s when he’s asked about Ygritte, the warrior who won Snow’s heart (played by wife Rose Leslie), that fans will get emotional. A slow smile crosses his face and he simply says “I wish I could have her back.”

Rose Leslie, whom he met on the show when she played Ygritte, actually stopped talking to him when he revealed to her how the series would end.

“I told my wife last year how it ended, and she wouldn’t talk to me for about three days. And she’d asked!”

Harington isn’t the only member of the GoT cast to be chastised for revealing too much about the big finale. Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in the series, was the victim of fan rage when stories started to circulate that she was spoiling the ending for her friends.

“The truth is I’ve only told two people. It’s not that many,” she explained.

The series has made Harington, Peter Dinklage and Sophie Turner household names among drama fans, while spawning a number of quizzes about Sean Bean’s inability to survive the shows he stars in.

Bean’s shocking death in Game of Thrones, set in motion a series of events, which will finally, hopefully, be resolved by the end of the upcoming final season. But considering the many twists and turns that have gripped fans so far, there are probably a few more surprises to come before it all comes to a final heart-wrenching end.

Game of Thrones season 8 starts on Sky Atlantic this April.
