'I was blown away by the flavours at a Cambs pub you'd never expect to serve delicious Thai food'
When you are looking for a good Thai restaurant, a classic British pub might not be the first thing you think of. But after hearing so many great things about The Wrestlers pub in Cambridge, I just had to try it out for myself.
The pub is found on the busy Newmarket Road and is stuck between a Tesco superstore and a dull retail park. It doesn't exactly have the best location so there must be a reason why people still go out of their way to visit it.
The CamBites series is on a mission to find the cheapest eats across Cambridgeshire. For a county with two Michelin star restaurants and food spots owned by famous chefs, it can be difficult to find somewhere to enjoy a meal while not breaking the bank.

My colleague Siobhan Middleton, who usually writes this column, is on holiday. So I decided to try my hand at finding the best cheap eats in Cambridge.
A lot of the country woke up to a snowy wonderland on the day I visited the pub but all I could see out of my window was damp. I wasn't in the best of moods while walking along the main road to The Wrestlers and wrapped in ten different layers of clothing to keep warm.
But as soon as I entered the pub, I was greeted by the warmth from not only the radiators but the pub's staff too. The open plan seating area filled with rustic furniture gave The Wrestlers that classic British pub feel.
Normally when I do these reviews, the restaurants I visit are empty considering it's the middle of the day on a random Tuesday and most people are at work. But I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of tables taken with people enjoying a spot of lunch and a lot of reserved signs dotted around the restaurant.
I settled down in a cosy corner and checked out the menu overflowing with Thai dishes. Every dish on the menu was below £15 unless you add extras but even those were all £3 or under and unlike most restaurants, curry and stir fry dishes came with rice included in the price.
I finally landed on the tried and true Thai dish that is Pad Thai with chicken, which cost £13.85. By the time my hands had just about thawed out, I was handed a heaped plate of noodles with steam visibly rising from it.
My icy mood melted away as I took my first bite. The noodles and vegetables were generously coated with a thick Pad Thai sauce that had the perfect umami flavour.
The crunchy sticks of carrot worked well when paired with the chewy rice noodles. The beansprouts, cabbage, and egg all added different textures to the meal.
As a fan of spring onions, I was happy to see huge chunks of it throughout the Pad Thai, adding even more depth to the already impressive taste. To top it off, the chicken was tender and easily fell apart when biting into it.
For just over £13 for a main meal, The Wrestlers is a great pub for an evening meal with friends or even just a quick lunch to treat yourself. Even though the pub's location is not ideal, it is unsurprising that the great food sees people making the journey to The Wrestlers.
