Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s stats eerily similar to Hall of Fame dad's

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. must really admire his Hall of Fame father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr.

Guerrero Jr. has 87 home runs through his first 403 MLB games with an on-base percentage of .363. Guerrero Sr. also swatted 87 long balls over the first 403 games of his MLB career, with an on-base percentage of — you guessed it — .363.

The 403 games are an arbitrary number, sure, but to have the statistics line up after such a large sample is downright eery.

Guerrero Jr. hasn't been able to recapture the form that saw him finish as the runner-up in MVP voting last fall, slashing .258/.341/.493 this season compared to an eye-popping .311/.401/.601 in 2021. But the 23-year-old has been heating up at the dish of late, posting an OPS over 1.000 with six home runs so far in June.

His hot streak has coincided with an impressive stretch for his team, as the Blue Jays have gone 14-4 over their past 18 games and currently occupy the top American League wild-card position with a 36-24 record.

The younger Guerrero still has a long way to go if he hopes to match his father's legendary career. Guerrero Sr. spent 16 years in the majors, hitting 449 home runs and making nine All-Star teams. He won the AL MVP award in 2004 and has eight Silver Slugger trophies to his name.

Guerrero Sr. also rose to stardom in Canada, spending the first eight years of his decorated career with the Montreal Expos. He signed with the Anaheim Angels in 2004 and stayed in California for six seasons before closing out his major-league days with one-year stints with the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

The Dominican Republic native was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.
