BMW driver fled to Stoke-on-Trent after hitting pedestrian at 68mph in 30 zone
A BMW driver who was high on drugs fled to Stoke-on-Trent after he struck a pedestrian at around 68mph in a 30mph zone. Ahmed Lal was in his friend's car when he hit a man crossing the road.
Shrewsbury Crown Court heard the victim was left with a fractured left foot, pelvic bone and hip - as well as significant bruising to his chest and left eye. The force of the impact caused the victim to end up in the backseat of the convertible.
Lal, 24, was arrested at the side of the road and tested positive for cannabis. He was then taken into custody. But s hortly after he was released, while police continued to investigate, officers realised he had given them false details during his interview. They then learned he'd done a runner to Stoke-on-Trent.

Officers were able to quickly locate Lal. He was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle without third party insurance, driving a motor vehicle otherwise in accordance with a licence, and driving under the influence of drugs.
CCTV footage, played during his trial, showed Lal driving erratically around Wellington in Shropshire shortly before the collision in Watling Street on June 18, 2023. He had been driving on a provisional licence and did not display L plates on the vehicle.
Lal, of King Street, Wellington, was found guilty of all charges and was sentenced to five years behind bars on Tuesday, January 28. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Lal’s actions were not only irresponsible and left someone with serious injuries, but also delayed us getting justice after he gave false details.
"I hope the sentence given to Lal by the judge will be able to bring some sort of closure to his victim, who has already suffered enough.”
