Boaters Get a Close Look at Stromboli Island's Volcano Eruption

Boaters who were sailing off Messina, Sicily got a close-up look at Stromboli Island’s volcano erupting on Wednesday, August 28.

This video, captured by Elena Schiera while on a ferry ride, shows a column of gas and ash rising from the volcano and falling into the ocean.

The plume from the eruption extended more than one mile high, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said.

At the time of writing, there were no reported injuries from Wednesday’s eruption, local media said. Credit: Elena Schiera via Storyful
