Comedy favourite Bob Mortimer has thrown his hat into the ring for the celebrity edition of The Traitors. Bob has revealed he is keen to join the ranks of the Faithfuls or show a darker side to his lovable ways and become a murderous Traitor.

Bob, who is loved for his hilarious yet seemingly unbelievable tales on the BBC's Would I Lie to You and partnership with Vic Reeves, revealed his desire to join the mega-hit reality series. He told the Mirror: "It's the only show of its kind on TV that I would agree to get involved with but, yes, definitely count me in, I'd love to do it."

Bob is such a fan of the game of deception that he has watched every installment of the global phenomenon, tuning in to variants from the US, UK, and Australia. He said: "I watch the American, UK and Australian versions of The Traitors," he said. "I think they're all great, it's a brilliant format. And Claudia [Winkleman] is the best of the presenters."

Bob made the comments as he is set to return to screens with the latest series of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing this autumn. Sources close to the BBC show believe he would be a great signing for the first celebrity series.

They said: "Bob would be comedy gold. Just brilliant. He'll be getting a call, for sure.",

Bob's excitement for the show comes just days after Ricky Gervais dismissed rumours that he would join the cast. The Office and Afterlife star said: "I love the show and I'm very flattered, but it won't happen. I'm too busy and there's no way they could afford me."

Host Claudia has previously revealed her dream casting for a celebrity series. She said: "Victoria Coren, Kirsty Young, Adam Woodyatt, Stephen Fry, Alison Hammond. Let's do that."

Other names thought to be in the mix include Jonathan Ross and Kathy Burke, both of whom are big fans of the show. With Claudia's friendship with Courtney Cox, there's been talk that the Friends actress might also be approached by the producers.

Other famous enthusiasts who could receive an invite include Radio 2's Rylan Clark and Richie Anderson, Loose Women's Judi Love, Radio 1's Greg James, and Coronation Street's Sally Ann Matthews.

Executive producer Mike Cotton believes the star-studded version will be just as great as previous series of The Traitors. He said: "Seeing famous faces navigate the round table or don the infamous green cloaks will be unmissable TV. There's a whole lot of exciting treachery and deception yet to come from the Highlands. Claudia's going to have to pack some extra knitwear."
