A popular Leicester restaurant has announced its permanent closure after more than eight years in the city centre. Bodega Cantina, which serves South American food and drink, will shut its doors for good this weekend.

The restaurant, located in St Martin's Square, will close permanently after service on Sunday, January 26. Management said the "painful decision" had been taken due to the business no longer being financially viable.

Bosses of Bodega Cantina took to social media to announce the news to customers today (Wednesday, January 22). The closure comes amid wider challenges in the hospitality sector, with recent industry figures from accountancy firm Price Bailey showing that more than one in 10 restaurants nationally were at "imminent" risk of closure.

In a statement on social media, Bodega Cantina said: "We have thoroughly enjoyed serving fresh and handmade South American food and drink in Leicester for over eight years. Unfortunately, the restaurant is no longer financially viable, so the painful decision has been taken to close."

The restaurant said its Birmingham branch would remain open. Management added: "We hope the closure at the end of this week allows customers to experience Bodega Cantina for the last time in Leicester."
