Body found in river as search for missing man reaches tragic conclusion

A body has been found as the search for a pensioner was brought to a tragic conclusion. Police had issued an urgent appeal for sightings of Brian - whose last name has not been released - after he was reported missing on Friday (May 31).

Officers have now confirmed a body was pulled from the River Dove, near Wood Lane in Uttoxeter, at 11.25am today (June 3). The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Formal identification will take place in due course but it is believed to be missing Brian, 81, who lived in the town.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We can sadly confirm that a body has been found in the search for missing 81-year-old Brian, from Uttoxeter. Since he was reported missing on Friday, officers have been searching the area and carrying out enquiries to try and find him.

"At 11.25am this morning, we were called to the River Dove, near Wood Lane in Uttoxeter, after a body of a man was spotted in the water. Formal identification will take place in due course, but at this stage, we believe the man to be missing Brian.

"We are not treating the death as suspicious and a file has been prepared for HM Coroner. We’d like to thank everyone who has come forward with information as part of the efforts to try and find him over the last few days, as well as those who shared the appeals for information. Specially-trained officers are supporting his family as much as possible at this time."
