Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio has revealed that he almost killed off Richard Madden’s lead character PC David Budd in the show’s final episode.

Mercurio kept viewers guessing in the hit BBC show, which is now airing on Netflix in the US, by killing off Keeley Hawes’ lead character, the home secretary Julia Montague,

In a interview with Vulture in the US, Mercurio said that he wanted to created a feeling of the unexpected always being around the corner.

“It [killing him off] was something that we very definitely played with as being a possibility,” he said.

“I think once you do the unexpected and you take the viewers to a position of discomfort about being able to rely on characters surviving, then it does completely affect the way in which the drama is viewed.

“That real sense of jeopardy is something that we worked really hard to create.”

However, he decided that it wouldn’t be best for the show to kill off his second lead character.

“I felt that for this TV show, it was probably too nihilistic to go that route,” he added.

It follows news that Madden is already meeting Mercurio about plans for the second series.

“I’m going to meet Jed in a couple of weeks, to have a chat and see what’s in his brilliant brain,” he told Deadline.

“So, I’m like, what can happen next? You know, with David. Because he had a hell of a couple months there. Where do you go with this guy?”
