Bodyguard actress Keeley Hawes has revealed that she was about to quit acting before her role in the BBC thriller came along.

And what a pivot this ended up being for the 42-year-old; Bodyguard is now officially the most watched TV drama in the UK since records began.

Although Hawes has worked on some really interesting shows across her career – including Life on Mars sister-show Ashes to Ashes – she recently told The Financial Times about her professional insecurities.

The star revealed that she'd spent five months unemployed before landing the role of Julia Montague MP in the hit show, elaborating: "I was thinking, 'Right, it's time to start thinking about something else.

"[That feeling] never goes away. You are constantly thinking, 'Nobody wants me'... It's such a personal reaction.

"So I don't know what I'm doing still in this industry," she joked.

Usually one to walk the streets unnoticed, Hawes' involvement with Bodyguard has brought her to the attention of a mass audience. Taking her son and his friends to Thorpe Park for a day of rollercoasters earlier this year, it dawned on the actress just how huge the success of the show was.

"I knew [the series] was doing all right, but I didn’t know what I was walking into," she discussed. "Nothing is as odd as finding yourself in the centre of Bodyguard and what happened this year - nothing. I think we are all still slightly reeling from it."
