The Bold Type is currently airing its fifth and final season on Freeform. Kat (Aisha Dee), Sutton (Meghann Fahy) and Jane's (Katie Stevens) friendship is the heart of the show - each character has gone through deeply personal and life-changing storylines throughout its history.

Kat's journey was particularly poignant as it gave a voice to women of colour in the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the show, Kat has been open about her sexuality, and one love interest in particular became unforgettable – Adena (Nikohl Boosheri).

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Nikohl explained how it felt to explore Adena's backstory, specifically when viewers found out that Adena's father once forced her to go through gay conversion therapy.

"I think that storyline caught even me off-guard. It was really heavy. We didn't take it lightly, you know? I was trying to make sense of how this would have worked for her, having not grown up in America," Nikohl said.

"It's really so sad that so many of the times, the people that you trust the most are the people that end up hurting you, because they think they're protecting you. For Adena, it was her father. We've known from the beginning that she doesn't have that much of a relationship with her dad, and we really got to find out why."

Adena's storyline as a Muslim woman in the LGBTQ+ community is significant as it's something not often seen on television. Nikohl said that it was a "huge responsibility" to tell such a story.

Nikohl added: "That was a really important story to tell. I felt like it was a huge responsibility to tell it through Adena's lens. I hope we did it some justice."

The final season of The Bold Type will only have six episodes and the second episode is set to air in the US on Wednesday night (June 2).

The Bold Type airs on Freeform in the US or Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in the UK.
