The Bold Type has been a forward-thinking and critically acclaimed show for much of its run so far, but one storyline in particular invited some controversy from the fanbase, when Kat Edison embarked on a relationship with a Republican woman.
Although she wasn't involved in that plotline, Nikohl Boosheri, who plays Kat's love interest Adena El-Amin, has come out and talked about the "challenging" backlash-inducing relationship.
"Oh, that’s tough," she told Digital Spy. "I wasn’t there. I feel like the ex-lover, even as Nikohl, because I’m jealous that I’m not there. I’m like, 'What the hell?'
"But the actors did an incredible job with a really challenging storyline. You never know how audiences are going to respond.
"Not every idea is… you know, there are so many levels to how it’s ultimately going to translate. But I think that they did a really lovely job, and it’s not my place to judge Kat’s other lovers."
Kat actress Aisha Dee previously criticised the storyline – even though she gave it her all – while also hitting out at the lack of diversity behind the scenes, which made the on-screen diverse casting less authentic.
Nikohl's comments are part of a lengthy interview for our Rainbow Crew series), in which she spoke about the show's ending and the impact of being a queer Muslim woman on screen.
The Bold Type airs on Freeform in the US, and Netflix in the UK.
