The Bold Type series finale spoilers follow.
The Bold Type's series finale aired on Wednesday (June 30), titled 'I Expect You to Have Adventures'.
Kat (Aisha Dee), Jane (Katie Stevens) and Sutton's (Meghann Fahy) friendship was at the heart of the show, after they all met while working for Scarlet magazine.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the stars explained how the final episodes nearly looked completely different, with scripts being rewritten moments before shooting.
Viewers will know that Jane was being lined up to replace Jacqueline as editor-in-chief of Scarlet, but she ended up leaving the magazine to travel. Stevens revealed that the first draft of the finale script was different and that Jane was going to stay on at Scarlet.
Stevens said: "But I was like, 'I feel like it's way more effective to Jane's arc if she leaves and kind of drops her safety net.'"
Jane was inspired by her mother when making the decision to leave. Stevens described it as an "Eat Pray Love moment" for her character.
Elsewhere, Sutton and Richard (Sam Page) got their happy ending after their turbulent will-they-or-won't-they story. Originally, Sutton was going to stay on her own.
"It was going to end with Sutton being on her own, which is such a valid story to tell, I just think that Sam and I really felt like, based on the way that we had built the characters up to that point, that it would've been more satisfying to see them stay together," Fahy explained.
"The night before we were supposed to shoot Sutton's ending with Richard, they rewrote the whole thing and changed it. And that was amazing because it ended the way that Sam and I really wanted it to and we didn't think that we were going to get that. So we were really happy that they changed it."
Kat had a difficult time as she took risks in her career, but she ended up taking over from Jacqueline as editor-in-chief of Scarlet.
Explaining Kat's ending, Dee said: "I kind of love that that's the way it ended and weirdly I do think it's right for Kat. She's not bossy, she's the boss. That's the vibe."
Dee also mentioned that when Kat quit her job at the Belle, the writers told her that they'd write Kat back into the magazine. Dee said that she'd only see Kat doing that if she was running Scarlet.
"And I was kind of like, 'Okay, but I don't think Kat would go back unless she's running the shit.' I was half joking when I said that, I didn't think it would actually happen," she added.
The Bold Type airs on Freeform in the US or Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in the UK.
