A bomb disposal team has been dispatched to investigate a ‘suspicious looking coffee cup’ in a town centre.

The takeaway cup was found at the Forum Centre in Stevenage by a council staff member, who alerted emergency services.

The cup appeared to have sellotape and a microchip attached to the side of it, and an Explosives Ordnance Disposal team has been called in to safely remove it.

A number of local shops and businesses have been evacuated.

Hertfordshire police said in a statement: “A 100m police cordon is in place as a precaution to ensure the safety of the people living and working in the locality.

“Road closures are currently in place on St Georges Way at the junction with Six Hills Way, Fairlands Way and Lytton Way so we would advise people to avoid the area.”
