Bomb squad race to Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station after 'suspicious item' discovered

A popular Scots transport hub has been shut off after the discovery of a potentially suspicious item. The alarm was raised at around 1.10pm this afternoon.

Officers from Police Scotland raced to Buchanan Bus Station, in Glasgow, to investigate. A post on the Police Scotland Greater Glasgow Facebook page confirmed the closure.

Pictures from the scene show numerous police vehicles and officers at the junction of North Hanover Street and Cowcaddens Road, near to one of the entrances to the bus station.

A police cordon can be seen behind the vehicles, on Cowcaddens Road, while over a dozen people, many of whom are wearing hi-vis vests, are standing looking on.

A picture from Killermont Street shows a cordon of red and white tape around the entrance to the building, wirth crowds of people opposite the station.

The post read: "Buchanan Bus Station is closed following a report of a potential suspicious item around 1.10pm. Killermont Street is closed to traffic and pedestrians.

"The public is advised to avoid the area. EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) has been notified and enquiries are ongoing." The bus station is used by over 40,000 passengers every day.

Glasgow Caledonian University is believed to have been ordered to evacuate the campus as a precaution.

There are more than 1,700 services to and from the bus station every day, with passengers arriving from and leaving for destinations across the UK.

It is operated by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, the transport authority for the west of Scotland. The body posted on X about the incident.

The post on the site read: "Apologies all, Buchanan Bus Station is currently closed to passengers while police deal with an emergency incident.

"There is no access to the station for passengers & no buses are entering or leaving the station. We will update you when station reopens. Apologies for the inconvenience."

They posted again an afterwards: "Buchanan Bus Station and surrounding area remains closed due to the ongoing police incident. Please do not come to the bus station. For info on the impact on specific bus services please check with the relevant bus operator. Expect disruptions."
