Emily Deschanel has joined the fourth season of TNT's drama Animal Kingdom, landing her first TV role since leaving the hit series Bones.

Deschanel will feature as a recurring guest star, playing the role of Angela, the former best friend of Julia who has recently been released from prison.

The official character description states Angela is a recovering junkie who arrives at the Cody house trying to snake her way back into the family’s good graces.

She’s a survivor, scrappy, manipulative and an addict. Angela’s history as Julia’s drug buddy gives her power, as she tries to seduce Pope (Shawn Hatosy), is hated by J (Finn Cole) and under suspicion by Smurf (Ellen Barkin).

Animal Kingdom was renewed for its fourth season back in July. Based on the 2010 Australian film of the same name, it also stars Barkin, Hatosy, Cole, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Molly Gordon and Carolina Guerra.

This is Deschanel's first TV role since the emotional season 12 finale of Bones in 2017. The last ever episode, titled 'The End in the End', saw – spoilers! – Dr Temperance 'Bones' Brennan suffer minor brain damage that affected her intelligence and the ability to piece together the show's final case.

Her Bones co-star David Boreanaz went on to replace Jim Caviezel in the CBS Navy SEALs drama Person of Interest. The show dramatises the top-secret and dangerous missions taken on by the SEALs to protect US interests around the world, with Boreanaz's character Jason being the SEAL assault team's battle-weary leader.
