Boris Johnson will fly to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday to pay his respects to the country’s late pro-western ruler, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, after the latter’s death on Friday.

The Prime Minister spoke of a “wise and respected leader”, praising his contribution to stability in the Middle East.

It came as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan was unanimously elected as the UAE’s new president by the country’s Federal Supreme Council.

Sheikh Mohammed’s ascension was widely expected, having effectively led the desert state of 10 million people for many years while Sheikh Khalifa was sidelined by poor health.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi,” said Mr Johnson.

“He was a wise and respected leader who will be missed enormously. Through his work as President and Sheikh he has made a personal contribution to regional stability and conservation which will long be remembered.

“I know that the long and deep ties, which unite our countries, will continue and through our cooperation and friendship, we can ensure peace, prosperity and justice in the world.”

President Emmanuel Macron of France will also travel to Abu Dhabi on Sunday to pay tribute and show support for the new Emirati leader.

Vladimir Putin was quick to offer his congratulations to Sheikh Mohammed, saying his election would “help reinforce the friendly relations” between the two countries.

Under Sheikh Mohammed’s low-key de facto leadership, the UAE has put a man into space; sent a probe to Mars; opened its first nuclear reactor; and used its oil-funded clout to develop a more assertive foreign policy.

Closely allied with Saudi Arabia, it has emerged as a leader of a reshaped Middle East since the retreat of traditional Arab powers and the reduced involvement of the United States, forging ties with Israel and joining a war against Iran-backed militants in Yemen.

Sheikh Khalifa gave his name to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

He battled with ill health since suffering a stroke in 2014.
