Boris Johnson Gives Apology Following Video Leak, but Denies There Was a Downing Street Party

Boris Johnson has apologised in the House of Commons after a video from December 2020 was published by ITV showing then press secretary Allegra Stratton and prime ministerial adviser Ed Oldfield talking about an alleged party at Downing Street.

“I understand and share the anger … at seeing No 10 staff seeming to make light of lockdown measures,” the prime minister said.

“I was also furious to see that clip,” he said.

“I apologise unreservedly for the offence that it has caused up and down the country. And I apologise for the impression it gives.”

Johnson said he had been “repeatedly assured” that there was “no party and that no COVID rules were broken.”

He said he had asked the cabinet secretary to establish all the facts and to report back as soon as possible.

“If rules have been broken, there will be disciplinary action for all those involved,” he said. Credit: Parliament TV via Storyful
