Boris Johnson press conference: What time is coronavirus briefing and where can you watch live?

Boris Johnson is to hold a press conference later on Tuesday to give the latest on the coronavirus pandemic.

The prime minister will host the briefing from Number 10 Downing Street at 5pm.

He will be accompanied by Professor Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, and Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser.

The briefing can be watched live on BBC and Sky News channels.

The briefing will come almost 24 hours after Johnson addressed the nation to announce a new national coronavirus lockdown for England.

On Monday evening, he told the country that people should stay indoors unless it’s for medical reasons, buying food, exercising or working if it’s not possible to do so from home.

Just two hours after Johnson’s briefing on Tuesday, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will make his own televised statement.

At 7pm, Starmer’s response to the prime minister’s lockdown announcement will be broadcast on BBC1, the Labour Party said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Starmer said he hoped Johnson was “not overpromising” when he said 13 million people will be vaccinated by the middle of February.

The Labour leader told BBC Breakfast: “That’s the ambition of the prime minister. It’s going to be a struggle and we need to make this work.”

On Tuesday, cabinet office minister Michael Gove said England’s new lockdown restrictions won’t begin to ease until March.

Meanwhile, doctors have compared hospitals to “warzones” as Johnson said admissions were 40% greater than they were during the first peak of the pandemic last April.

The UK’s four chief medical officers recommended a move to COVID-19 alert level five, meaning the NHS is in danger of being overwhelmed within 21 days if no action is taken.

The prime minister’s address to the nation on Monday evening was watched by an average audience of 15.6 million viewers on the BBC.

The broadcaster said an average of 14.1 million people watched on BBC1, while an additional 1.5 million tuned in on the BBC News channel.

ITV said another 5.4 million viewers watched the address on its channel. The statement was also broadcast on Channel 4 and Sky.

Following the return to lockdown, chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a support package of £4.6bn for businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.
