Boris Johnson registers nearly £2,000 of baby gifts for the birth of his son

Boris Johnson has registered nearly £2,000 in gifts following the birth of his son, including from two major Tory donors.

Downing Street saw arrivals of flowers and presents after the Prime Minister's son, Wilfred, was born on April 29 in a London hospital.

Now Mr Johnson’s register of interests shows these included gifts from two Conservative party donors – as well as a £750 hamper.

Simon Blagden, a former boss of the Japanese company Fujitsu's operations in the UK, gave the new parents a £350 gift hamper.

Anthony Gallagher, the property developer, gave a “sterling silver envelope” worth £780.

Mr Gallagher has donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to the Conservative Party and hosted David Cameron’s 50th birthday party at his mansion in Oxfordshire.

In total the Prime Minister registered £1,880 of gifts in his Parliamentary register of interests received in the two weeks following the birth of his son.

However, on Friday evening Number 10 said Mr Gallagher’s gift will be returned and was added to the Parliamentary register in error.

A Number 10 source said: “The Prime Minister is very grateful for the kind offer from Mr Gallagher but has opted to return it.”

The gift will be removed from the register, Number 10 said. Mr Johnson will keep the two hampers, worth £1,100 collectively.

While the brands of the hampers were not specified, Fortnum and Mason sells a "Bundle of Joy" hamper which costs £350 and includes champagne, a teddy bear and swaddling blanket for the newborn.

The £750 gift hamper was donated by Mohammad Chohan. Harrods sells hampers full of luxury baby clothes which cost more than £700.

Mr Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds celebrated the arrival of their son in the early hours of April 29, just 17 days after the Prime Minister left hospital after recovering from coronavirus.

Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson was named after Mr Johnson's paternal grandfather, Wilfred Johnson, a decorated Second World War pilot, and Ms Symonds's maternal grandfather, Lewis Lawrence, known as Lawrie.

Downing Street said Mr Johnson was "present throughout" the birth of his son, which was at an University College London Hospital in London.
