The Borough Market Kitchen: Everything you need to know about the new food court

Borough Market has been feeding Londoners in some form for at least 800 years – but, as it has consistently proven, it is more than possible to teach an old dog new tricks.

In the late 90s, the historic wholesale market was invigorated into a mecca for artisan foods in the capital. Fast forward 20 years and Borough Market is not only a street food favourite, but has increasingly beckoned prominent London restaurateurs to open fully fledged dining hotspots on its peripheries.

Now, it’s ready for the next foodie phase, with a new food hall hosting a wealth of exciting traders opening up in one of its corners.

From Michelin-starred chefs to its eco credentials, here’s everything you need to know about the Borough Market Kitchen.

What is the Borough Market Kitchen?

In short, this is Borough Market’s answer to London’s growing taste for food courts. A new addition to the historic culinary hotspot, the Borough Market Kitchen is an outdoor-but-covered, communal dining space. It will host 20 different food vendors – ranging from reworked Borough favourites to exciting newcomers – and have room for 200 covers.

Whether they are cooking up Singaporean street food or Spanish tapas, all of the vendors will be using seasonal produce supplied by the market’s own traders, with every dish on the menu required to source at least 30 per cent of its ingredients from Borough Market. This sustainable approach is being extended to the build and the packaging too: the Kitchen will be constructed from recycled, sustainable materials, and single-use plastic will be banned.

Where is it and when does it open?

Opening in a former car park, The Borough Market Kitchen can be found in Jubilee Place, just off Winchester Walk (SE1 9AG), on the north side of the market. It will be open to the public for the first time on November 18 – it will then be open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Thursday and on Saturdays, from 10am to 6pm on Fridays, and will be closed on Sundays.

The starting line-up for the Borough Market Kitchen features 13 traders with stands (permanent fitted kitchens) and a further 10 vendors which will trade from pop-up stalls. A big new name entering the ring will be Michelin-starred former Pidgin chef Elizabeth Haigh, who will be introducing Mei Mei, her new Singaporean cafe concept. There are a few more newcomers, but many of the traders will be familiar to Borough Market fans – Arabica Bar & Kitchen will have a stand, Spanish deli Brindisa will open Brindisa Kitchen, Gourmet Goat will operate Elpiniki and cooking school Mimo will be behind new pintxos bar Batera.
