A Lanarkshire boxing club which has produced an Olympian and helped hundreds take part in the sport has received a funding boost.

Members at Auchengeich boxing club has £10,000 of new equipment to upgrade their clubhouse from housebuilder Persimmon West Scotland and housing association Sanctuary Scotland.

The knockout partnership joined forces to provide new flooring, treadmills and other much-needed training materials for the club’s base in Stepps.

Auchengeich was founded in Moodiesburn by miners from the local colliery and was previously based at the area’s Pivot Centre.

Its homegrown champions include Brian Carr, a former Commonwealth champion who represented Team GB at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and who is now a coach at the club – which will mark its 50th anniversary next year.

The club serves everyone from budding boxers to those who want to keep fit and aims to keep costs as low as possible to ensure that anyone with a passion for the sport can take part.

Auchengeich representative Joe Martin said: “We’re grateful to have received this donation from Persimmon Homes and Sanctuary Scotland – this will ensure we have the equipment to provide a safe space for people of all ages to take part in activities from boxing to keep fit classes.”

The donation from the five-star builder and Sanctuary Scotland is part of their community contribution associated with the Royale Meadows development in nearby Muirhead.

Craig Moore of Persimmon said: “We’re keen to support the areas we operate in and the club is a key part of the local community – I hope the donation will give the club a real boost and benefit local people.”

Gillian Lavety of Sanctuary added: “We’re committed to investing in local communities; I’m delighted that we’ve been able to work with Persimmon to support Auchengeich boxing club and hope all this new equipment will be a great boost to members and help the club go from strength to strength.”
