A 10-year-old boy has died after being hit by a lorry while cycling near a school.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, just after 8.30 on Monday morning.

Paramedics battled to save the boy but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cambridgeshire police said the collision took place on Weasenham Lane, near to Thomas Clarkson Academy. It was not immediately clear if the boy was a student at the secondary school.

The road was closed in both directions throughout Monday and motorists were warned to avoid the area.

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "A boy has died following a collision in Wisbech this morning.

"Emergency services were called at 8.36am today to reports of a collision in Weasenham Lane involving a lorry and a boy riding a bike.

"Sadly the boy has died at the scene."
