A 12-year-old boy has been sent death threats for inadvertently killing a pregnant meerkat after it bit his finger during a school trip to a zoo.

The incident took place at Kecskemet zoo in central Hungary when the unnamed boy reached through a fence and touched the meerkat, allegedly ignoring signs advising not to.

The pregnant meerkat called Zara bit the boy who then threw it to the ground breaking its back.

Zoo director Tamás Tokovics condemned the boy on Facebook following the incident which occurred on May 14.

He said that the “youth of today do not respect nature" and blamed teachers who are "less and less able to control their pupils."

Although Mr Tokovics said the boy should not be targeted, the 12-year-old has since received abusive messages online and even death threats.

One person wrote: “I really hope that the kid and his father are sinking in shame.”

The boy’s father also spoke out about the incident. He accused the zoo of not taking better care of its animals.

According to Mr Tokovics, Zara was a huge attraction for the zoo.

He wrote: “I’m sure many of you remember that she became a media star a year-and-a-half ago when she came to us.

“With her bustle, curiosity, shirking, she stole herself into everyone’s heart."
