Boy, 15, dies and second boy, 14, in critical condition after group of teens 'got into difficulty' in River Eden in Carlisle

The body of a teenage boy has been found in the River Eden after a group of friends "got into difficulty" on the Carlisle waters, police have said.

An extensive search was launched after the 15-year-old boy first went missing almost 24 hours ago.

Police were called at 6.41pm to a stretch of river near Rosehill following reports the four boys had got into difficulty.

One of the group, aged 14, was airlifted to hospital yesterday evening and remains in a critical condition.

Another boy managed to swim to safety, while one was rescued by a member of the public.

No formal identification has yet been confirmed, however, the family of the 15-year-old has been informed. They are being supported by specialist officers.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

Chief superintendent Lisa Hogan, of Cumbria Constabulary, said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the 15-year-old boy at this difficult time.

"An extensive search operation has taken place since the incident was reported yesterday evening.

"The search activity was assisted by emergency services, search and rescue teams, and specialist search professionals from Cumbria and from outside the county."

The incident came as much of the country began to experience hints of summer, with clear sunny skies and temperatures creeping above 20C.

The Met Office, which recorded highs of 21C (70F) in Carlisle on Friday, issues open water safety guidance for the summer months.

It says while people may be tempted to enter open waters like rivers to cool off, it can be dangerous. Swimmers are advised to stick together and be aware of "cold water shock" - an involuntary response that occurs when the body is suddenly or unexpectedly immersed in water less than 15C (59F).
