A five-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car as he crossed the road.

The boy, from Bournemouth, Dorset, was knocked down by a black Vauxhall Corsa at approximately 3.45pm yesterday.

He suffered head injuries and was taken to Poole Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The driver of the car is believed to be a woman in her 20s who was ‘shaken but uninjured’.

In a statement, Joe Pardey of the Dorset Police traffic unit said: ‘It is with great sadness for me to say that this young boy died from the injuries he sustained in the collision. Our thoughts are with all his family and friends.’

He added: ‘‘I would ask anybody who was in the area at the time to consider any dashcam or CCTV footage they may have which could assist us in our investigation.’

An air ambulance was also called to the scene, but it has been confirmed that the boy was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Local roads reportedly remained closed for a number of hours following the incident, before later reopening.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police by ringing 101, quoting 13:269.
