Boy aged eight takes mother's car for late-night joyride...at 87mph

An eight-year-old boy took his mother’s car for a night-time joyride on a road in western Germany where he reached speeds of 87 mph.

The child, who is ten years younger than the German legal driving age, was found on the A44 motorway in a lay-by on Wednesday morning in the direction of Dortmund.

Soest police said the boy’s mother called them on Wednesday after she noticed that both her son and her VW Golf had disappeared.

Once found, police said the boy told them: "I just wanted to drive a little."

Mother and police eventually found the boy at a highway service area where he had parked the car, turned on the hazard lights and put up the warning triangle.

According to police, the boy said he started feeling “uncomfortable” once he hit 140kph (87mph) on the highway.

The boy’s mother said her son regularly drives go-carts and bumper cars and has in the past practised driving a real car on private property.

Police have confirmed no property or people were hurt during the incident.

The legal age for driving in Germany is 18.

In July four children, between the ages of 10 and 14, stole their parent’s SUV and drove 1,000 kilometres down the Australian east coast before they were stopped by police.
