A boy has been seriously injured after being hit by multiple cars on the M5, closing the motorway in both directions.

The teenager was on foot when he was struck at about 11.15am on Wednesday, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS).

He is being treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital as police investigate how he ended up on the busy motorway.

The incident happened a short distance before the Oldbury interchange and the motorway was closed in both directions between junctions two and three, before reopening at 3pm.

West Midlands Police said the investigation is at an "early stage".

A WMAS spokesman said: "[The boy] was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken on blue lights to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"The doctor from the air ambulance travelled with the boy to hospital."

Nobody else needed treatment at the scene.
