A boy stole food and drink from an Asda delivery van parked up in Barton.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was caught on CCTV approaching the back of the supermarket van on Alden Crescent on October 11 last year.
Police officers went to speak to him after he was identified from the CCTV footage. “I’ve got to admit that one. Yes, it’s me – blatantly,” he was said to have told the officers after being shown the video.
Appearing before Oxford Youth Court on Wednesday (March 29), the boy pleaded guilty to a single count of theft from a motor vehicle.
Chairman of the bench Fiona Clarke asked him what went through his head when he saw the video of the theft. “That I’m an idiot,” he replied.
He added of the motivation behind the theft: “It was just there. I was just messing around and ended up doing it.”
The court heard that the boy was already working well with a youth offending team official.
The magistrates extended his existing youth referral order for three months.
Bench chairman Ms Clarke said: “It was clearly an impulsive and fairly thoughtless action and actions have consequences.”
Mitigating, Leanne Ballato said the boy was ‘sincere when he says that he’s sorry’.
